Chapter 10

As Carson pulled away from the driveway, Eva asked him, “So, how did that go?”

“It was interesting,” he said. “She has no love lost for either you or your grandmother, but, after trashing both of you, she did acknowledge that her father admitted to having an affair on your grandmother, though she didn’t admit to him stealing. She still defends him and probably believes him all too much. She also says she had nothing to do with either of you and wouldn’t want her life to go down that pathway.”

They were out on the road, when he continued. “When she realized her father had lied about the affair, it brought up all kinds of stuff for Melody because she had a boyfriend who cheated on her at some point. Apparently she chastised her father pretty badly for his actions, and it’s made her a little more forgiving to your grandmother.”

He was thinking hard. “On the other hand, I don’t think she has necessarily dealt with everything, and she has a lot of issues unresolved, when it comes to Aida.”

“So, are you saying she is completely stable and normal?”

“Maybe not. The bottom line is, I’m not sure she’s involved.”

“And what about her father?” Eva asked, still trying to process everything he had just shared.

“Well, that’s part of the problem,” he noted. “According to Melody, he’s got a new lady friend, and it’s a good deal for him. This woman is very generous to her and her dad, and Melody has warned him many times about not doing anything to screw it up.”

“Well, that should be fun,” Eva noted, “because that would just mean he has another person on the string.”

“Maybe,” Carson stated, “but we can’t judge him for that, and you know that everybody thinks they are entitled to another chance.”

“Maybe, but yet they aren’t extending that second chance to my grandmother.”

“Exactly. Melody also brought up that, because your grandmother didn’t go to the cops, it was all just made up to get back at Melody’s dad for screwing around on Aida.”

“Of course Melody would say that, and honestly we’ve all seen women who do that too many times,” she replied, as Carson interrupted her thoughts.

“Yes, we have,” he murmured. “It still sucks though. Because your grandmother didn’t do anything official, then it does look like she’s just trying to make things up to get back at him.”

“So it is what it is?” she asked him.

“Well, we’re off to see him now.”

“Great,” she muttered.

“And, this time, maybe you should stay in the car.”

“Yeah, I probably should.” She groaned. “I didn’t realize how hard it would be to see her again.”

“Melody really disturbed you before she was fired, didn’t she?”

“Yeah, it’s like, … I don’t know. If she were on medication, I would have recommended that the dose be raised because she was just getting weirder.”

“Well, weird doesn’t necessarily mean dangerous or that she had an ulterior motive in any of her actions.”

“I know,” she agreed.

“And that’s just what investigative work is all about.
